Meanwhile we get none the wiser about the quest for the lost poet but get lost in all this unimportant sub stories which rarely connect with one another. The POV changes every time and so does the setting. So far so good, all the ingredients are here for an outstanding and terrifically exciting novel - BUT THEN DISASTER STRIKES.Īfter this first great part comes a tedious part of 300 long pages, filled with short pieces about two of the story's other characters. But this journey is rudely disrupted by a sub story of finding a lost poetess and fleeing from a pimp. They also tell us of life in the city, of getting by, having fun, of courting and be courted, of hookers and pimps, but most of all they tell us of the amiable poet who strives through discipline and watching and learning to get published and become a paid poet so he does not have to work the shifty jobs, lend money or steal or live off of others. They tell us if the rise and fall of a poetic movement and their beef with old school classics. Despite the 2 stars I really liked the chronological events that unfold in Mexico City and Sonora, seen through the eyes of the poet Garcia Madero.
